Spain Crowned European Champions after 44 years

Champions aren’t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them — a desire, a dream, a vision. — Muhammed Ali, American Boxer.

fernando-torres-scores-for-spain-in-the-finalSpain finally realised their dream of lifting the Euro Cup after 44 years when they defeated Germany 1-0. Quality football was on display for the 90 minutes and it looked like the Spanish had come with all their guns blazing. Germany, on the other hand, had no answers to the spanish moves. They looked overwhelmed by the big occassion.

Germany, who were looking for their fourth title, started strongly. But the start proved to be misleading as Spain took control of the match and looked dangerous throughout. In the 34th minute Fernando Torress scored the only goal and put his team in the lead. Though there were many chances on offer, Germany failed to pierce Spanish defence.

The last time they achieved victory was in 1964, when they had defeated erstwhile USSR. Also spain has never gone past the quarters of any major tournament in the past 24 years. Louis Aragones also becomes the oldest manager to win the Euro competition.

Spain had won all their games in this tournament and scored 16 goals while conceeding just 5. Xavi Hernandes was named Castrol Player of the year for this edition.

Germany has played some quality football throughout and failed to cross the final hurdle. They would now go up as runners up and be back for the world cup to be held in 2 years time.
